How the Internet Course Works

Once you've registered for the Internet course and created your Username and Password using the Cornell Guest ID process, you can Login to the active course site and Logoff at any time. After 6 months your Username and Password will expire, and you won't be able to use them any longer to go to the active course site. It's important that you plan to complete all 12 Modules in this course as soon as possible and not later than 6 months from the time you register. You're progress will be automatically tracked by your Username and Password as you complete each Module and submit your answers on the assessment answer sheet associated with each Module.

To Log On to the Active Course Site and Go to the Training Modules

  1. Open your Internet Browser (for most people this is either Internet Explorer or Netscape)
  2. Type in the Internet address for the Cornell Blackboard course site. This Internet address is in the Email message from seafoodhaccp@cornell.edu with the Subject “Internet Course Enrollment” that you received after you completed the Cornell Guest ID process and created your Username and Password.
  3. Click on the “Login” button on upper right side of the Cornell University Blackboard page, and type in the Username and Password in the Pop Up box that appears and click OK. The Username and Password must be typed exactly as you created them or you will get an “error” message.
  4. It's a good idea to add the Cornell Blackboard home page Internet address to your file of "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" so that you don't have to type it each time you return to the course site. After you have typed in the address the first time and the Blackboard Login page appears, move your cursor to the "Favorites" or "Bookmark" icon at the top of the Internet Explorer or Netscape Window Screen and click the left button on your mouse once. Then click the left button again on the Add or Add to Favorites or Bookmark command. This should save the course address in your computer's memory. When you want to return to the course site, open Internet Explorer or Netscape, click on Favorites or Bookmark, find the Cornell course site address, click the left button on your mouse twice and you will go to the course site.
  5. When you have successfully entered your Username and Password, you will come to a page that says Welcome, Your First Name at the top. In a box on the upper right side of the page will be the underlined words “HACCP: Seafood HACCP Alliance Training Course”. Click on these words twice with the left button of your mouse and you will go to a page with the active course Site Map. Simply click on the box that represents the Module that you want to work on and you will be taken to that Module. Use the "Next" and "Back" buttons on each page to work through each Module.

To Leave or Log-Off the Active Course Site

You can leave the course site or Module that you are working on at any time. Simply move your cursor with your mouse to the words “Logoff” on the upper right hand side of the Blackboard screen. Internet Course Options

This course can be used in several ways. You can use these options at any time.

A. View the entire course on-line. This is the optimal way to use this course. You will remain on-line (connected to the Internet) the entire time that you are working through the course Modules. This option allows you to use links to other sources of information as you are going through the course materials. It will also allow you to use the Interactive Worksheets and other Interactive features.

B. Download each module and save it on your computer. Each module in the training course is available as a PDF file, which can be downloaded to your desktop computer. After the module has been downloaded you can view the material on your desktop computer at your convenience. When you have reviewed all of the information, you will need to go back to the Blackboard site and Login with your Username and Password to complete the Interactive Worksheet examples and to submit the answers to the “Check Your Knowledge” questions for each module. You must submit the answers to the Quiz questions for each of the 12 Modules while you are logged in with your Username and Password before you can receive your Email notification that you have completed the Internet course.

C. Download the PDF file as described in B. and then print out the file. This allows you to read the information in the module on paper rather than on your computer screen. You will not be able to use the interactive features of the Internet course with this option. You will also have to go back and Login to the Internet course site to complete the Interactive Worksheet examples, answer the questions at the end of each module, and submit your answers.

Tips for Downloading PDF Files (Portable Document Format)

On the first page of each Module on the lower left side of the screen there is a button called "Download This Module in PDF Format". If you click on this icon with the left button on your mouse, the Module will be downloaded and saved to your computer. To do this you need to have a program called Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. There is a link on the first page of each Module that will allow you to get this program for free. Follow all instructions and make sure that this program has been downloaded and installed. For additional instructions on downloading this program, click here.

What happens after you click on the "Download this Module in PDF Format" button will depend on the preferences that are set on your computer. For some, the module will be downloaded and the Adobe Acrobat program will be activated and you will see the first page of the Module on your screen. For others the PDF file will be saved at some location on your computer. It is important that you write down or make a note of the directory location where the file is being saved so that you can find it again. It may be automatically saved to your "Desktop" directory, to a "My Downloaded Files" folder or some other location. You may also have the option of saving the file to a location that you specify. Just be sure that you write down or remember where the PDF file is saved so that you can find it again.

Internet Connections and Slow Downloading

The type of Internet connection that you have will determine how fast you can move through the pages in each Module, use the Interactive Worksheets, or download PDF files. If you have a phone line Internet connection these activities will be slower. You need to be patient.

The Interactive Worksheet pages are designed to take no more than 1 to 2 minutes to download using a slow modem connection. While this may seem relatively fast, when you are working on the Worksheet it may seem frustratingly slow. It's important that you wait until the element that you are working on is completely downloaded before trying to click onto the answer choices or the next item. If you get too far ahead, this process will get even slower because a backlog of files and/or commands will build up. Please read the Tips on Using the Interactive Worksheet section in each module.

At times of peak use for your Internet Service Provider, your modem may operate at an even slower rate. If download times become excessive, you may want to log off and come back to the module at a time when fewer people are using the Internet.

If Your Computer Locks Up

If you get too far ahead and there are so many files that are trying to download, your computer could lock up. If this happens you will need to reboot your computer by simultaneously pressing the Control, Alternate and Delete keys on your keyboard. If this doesn't work you may need to turn your computer off. You will then need to: 1. Turn the computer back on, 2. Open your Internet browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer), 3. Go to the Cornell Blackboard page (use Bookmark, Favorites, or the Internet address in your Email from Cornell confirming your registration), 4. Click on the Login button and type in your Username and Password in the pop up box, 5. Click on the course you are taking (HACCP: Seafood HACCP Alliance Training Program. 6. Click on the Module that you are working on in the course Site Map, and 6. Use the Next button on each page to return to the place in the Module that you were working on.
